What Happens After a DWI in North Carolina

After a DWI charge in North Carolina, most people are required to complete a clinical substance use assessment before they can move forward with court or DMV requirements.

This assessment is completed by a licensed provider and is used to understand whether alcohol or substance use has played a role in the situation. It includes a clinical interview, a review of history, and screening for risk factors.

Once the assessment is finished, a written recommendation is provided. This typically outlines whether education through ADETS or outpatient treatment is needed based on the clinical findings.

For many people, this is the step that brings clarity to the process. Until the assessment is completed, most individuals do not know what level of service will be required.
